Their relationship navigates cultural clashes, family disapproval, and themes of gang violence, racism, and police brutality.

TESTIMONIALS

In My Father’s House, directed by Jacalyn Kane, performed at the Teatro Paraguas in Santa Fe, New Mexico, is a play that explores the socio-economic relations between Angel, a male gang member in Los Angeles, and Alana, a wealthy female Jewish social-work student…. The tragic love story theme is quickly realized as we see excerpts of Angel’s gang life…An intimate bath scene with Alana and Angel was a risqué decision that is not often experienced in the theater and challenges the absence of promiscuity that is often avoided in American mainstream media. This scene brought an interesting stillness to the audience bordering discomfort and excitement to witness something in a theater we normally do not get to experience. This relatable moment added to the realness factor of the play. The pace of the play shifts the audience focus into an intense love affair of Angel and Alana and eliminates thoughts of socio-economic division.

‘It evoked so many emotions. I laughed and cried many times.’

‘One of the best local theatre shows we’ve seen in five years!’

In My Father's House resonated deeply with me as it beautifully captures a love story that transcends cultural divides. Directors Jacalyn Kane and Gary Brown's attention to detail truly brings Alana and Angel's journey to life, highlighting the complexities of societal challenges. Levi Lobo's raw and heartfelt performance as Angel, alongside Svea Kennedy’s compelling portrayal of Alana, adds an emotional depth that makes their romance feel both personal and profoundly moving.

‘From the intricate & stunning set design to the story line, interwoven music & the beautiful character portrayals, I was deeply moved.’

‘Thank you for creating such an impactful piece of art’

I saw and was conquered by your production of In My Father’s House yesterday. Your play is intense, iconoclastic and fearless in equal measure. The reason why I feel your play is such compelling theatre and you, as a futurist playwright understand that we are now entering the dark ages in earnest.

Fear of the “other” as a strategy and cold calculation is being used against all opposition as part of a cosmic global conflict between good and evil rather than a simple difference in political processes. Manichaean rules. The opposite of enlightenment is tribalism, groupthink and that is more and more where the United States is going. In My Father’s House can be viewed  as the horrorscape of the future. Even though your play is set in the past,  the past is never the past and when the powers that be decide to enshrine it, what inevitably happens is they kill the future.
